My Experience of Studying MSc in Digital Marketing Management at the University of Wolverhampton
Hey there, I’m Efe Joyce Ughulu-Osunbor. Join me on a journey as I share my experience studying MSc in Digital Marketing Management at the University of Wolverhampton. From the beginning to how the university equipped me with the skills, knowledge, and experience to succeed in digital marketing. So grab a cup of coffee, and let’s go!
How it all started
Transitioning from chemical engineering to digital marketing was one of the toughest decisions I’ve ever made. After graduating with a second class upper degree in chemical engineering, I couldn’t secure a job for over a year, so I decided to start an ecommerce business; selling general products online. However, when I reached out to a web developer to create an ecommerce website for my business, he charged me a steep amount of money that I couldn’t afford. I refused to give up on my goal, and instead decided to learn website development myself. After 3 months of learning and practicing, I built my first ecommerce website, which turned out to be a great success. I started receiving requests from local and international clients to develop websites for them, and eventually began making more money from website development than from my ecommerce business.
During Zoom meetings with my clients, I found myself becoming increasingly interested in their online marketing processes. I began offering free advice on how they could improve their marketing strategies, and soon realized that I had a talent for digital marketing consultation services. I discovered that I was passionate about helping businesses gain more visibility online, get more loyal customers, and increase sales.
As I delved further into the world of digital marketing, I found myself with more questions than answers. I wanted to know why some businesses ranked higher on Google than others. I wanted to know how some of the top brands have manage to maintain their relevance while others didn’t, and how businesses could optimize their digital marketing processes for more sales. Along the line, I founded my own digital marketing company in 2020, which grew faster than I ever imagined and brought in lots of local and international clients.
Then It was time
Despite my success, I knew that I needed to increase my knowledge and skills in digital marketing to manage a fast-growing company in a rapidly changing industry. That’s why I decided to pursue a master’s degree in digital marketing management at the prestigious University of Wolverhampton. I also wanted to be fully equipped to offer complete digital marketing services to businesses and be prepared for the bigger future that awaits me and my company.
The school environment and facilities
I arrived in the UK on February 5th, 2023 and started my classes at the business school on February 6th with high hopes. On my first day, I was blown away by the stunning school environment. The serene surroundings left me speechless as I strolled from one part of the school to another. But that was just the beginning. When I entered the Mary Seacole and Lord Swarj buildings, I was welcomed in a grand style by the automatic doors as they gave way for the arrival of the “boss lady” lol. The facilities were fantastic, including modern teaching spaces, IT suites, consulting rooms, a social hub, and a cafe. It all made for an amazing and productive learning environment.
The modules
Studying digital marketing management at the University of Wolverhampton has been an exciting experience. The modules equipped me with the theoretical and practical knowledge needed to understand and implement digital marketing tools and techniques. For instance, the “Digital Marketing communications” module taken by Dr Robert Harris; taught me about customers’ rapidly changing behaviour and how businesses can reposition their brand, develop a Strategic Marcomms Plan, and focus on delivering great customer experiences. This knowledge has helped me understand why businesses like Coca-Cola and Nike have remained competitive for years.
My favourite module taken by Dr Imran Maqbool Khan was “Search Engine and Social Media Marketing” where I learnt about contemporary digital marketing tools and techniques. I got equipped in search engine optimization, technical SEO, buyer persona, content marketing, social media marketing, paid advertising, and website and social media analytics. The module has made me a pro in helping businesses rank on Google’s first page.
Practical Experience
At the University of Wolverhampton, I had the opportunity to apply my theoretical knowledge in the real world. For instance, we acted as digital marketing consultants for a campervan brand, developing a digital marketing communication plan to boost engagement and growth. This exercise helped me improve my strategic thinking, analytical skills, and other essential skills required for success in digital marketing. Additionally, we were tasked with optimizing our LinkedIn account and creating a website with a blog, which I am writing on right now. Through search engine optimization (SEO), we were able to rank the website on the first page of Google. Thanks to Dr Imran’s class, I now have a better understanding of how to help businesses rank on Google’s first page.
Great Teaching Styles
The University of Wolverhampton’s teaching methods helped me gain a comprehensive understanding of digital marketing strategies. Through lectures, seminars, workshops, and group projects, I worked collaboratively with my coursemates in a team of 5-6; we brainstormed new ideas and strategies and presented them in PowerPoint to the class. This process enhanced my research skills, communication skills, teamwork abilities, and critical thinking.
Networking Opportunity
At the University of Wolverhampton, students can network with peers and professionals in the digital marketing industry. The student community is active and hosts various extracurricular activities and events, and there are guest lectures and industry events where students can connect with leaders in the field. For instance, I attended a marketing bootcamp organized by the business school, where I learnt from both industry experts and academics. The event provided a great opportunity for networking and I also connected with other like-minded individuals at a marketing event.
Conclusion
The University of Wolverhampton has prepared me well for a successful career in digital marketing. I feel confident and equipped with the necessary knowledge, skills, and experience to excel in this dynamic field. If you’re interested in pursuing a career in digital marketing, I highly recommend exploring the MSc in Digital Marketing Management program at the University of Wolverhampton. This more than an experience, it’s an epistle. You have shown and still showing that the 24/7 roundabout jobs are just systems that hold us down and pin down our true potentials.
